How big are our oceans...?

The world's oceans cover an area of roughly 140 million square miles, which amounts to about 70% of the Earth's surface. They represent about 97% of the total water on Earth. The rest is held in polar ice caps and glaciers (about 2%), rivers, lakes and underground. Less than 0.001% is held in the atmosphere.

The oceans represent the biggest habitable environment on Earth.
